Q: I would like to know the
best way to remove mold from the exterior of my
vinyl siding house?
A: The best way to
remove mold or mildew and prevent it from
coming back is to power wash your home and
scrub the surface with a mixture of TSP,
dish soap, and bleach. Use 4 cups of bleach
per gallon of water. After scrubbing the
siding of your home rinse the surface well
to remove any residue.
Q: Can I
apply latex base paint over an oil base
paint?
A: The answer is
no you can’t not without the proper
preparation and complete primer. Think of
it this way most oil paints have a thick
glossy surface like your car, do you think
latex paint will adhere to your car? Latex
paint will not stick to a smooth, thick,
glossy surface. Therefore the entire
surface will need to be washed, sanded, and
in most cases completely primed with a high
quality interior or exterior primer
depending on your project scope. Now on the
other hand latex paints usually are duller
than oil base paints, and oil base paints
will stick to just about any surface. Yes
you can apply oil base paint over top of
latex paint.
Q: I
would like to know if I could paint right
over top of my existing wallpaper without
the hassle of striping the wallpaper? I’m
not sure if the walls where properly
prepared and I’m afraid that I will damage
the walls if I attempt the wallpaper
removal.
A: Yes you can!
First repair any seems that are lose by
cutting them back, priming all the walls
with an order-less oil base primer,
plastering the seams where needed, and
caulking along the top of the ceiling where
needed.
Q: Hello
I just bought a home in Cleveland Heights I
would like to paint my walls and trim could
you please tell me the best interior wall
and trim paint to use.
A: Generally we
use flat paint for ceilings, satin paint
for walls, and semi gloss or satin (oil- or
latex) for trim. Sherwin Williams makes a
really nice wall paint called Promar 200
Satin. It has a low sheen so it looks nice
and hides imperfections well, but still
washes up decent. The Pro Classics Oil
Satin is really nice for trim.
Q:
Nice, informative article on
www.buildings.com One question, what pain
should be used (or not used) If routine
touch-up is expected?
A: For an area
that may have routine touch up I
recommend lighter colors... dark color
don't touch up well... As far as the
sheen level flat paints touch up the
easiest.... also eggshell or satin paints
do touch up ok but require more skill and
technique from a professional painter if
your looking for quality results.
Q:
Thank you the article about painting
products and preparation. A question, if
you don't mind. I act as owners rep for
construction projects, and am finding
painting contractors telling me that
their costs for applying eggshell vs.
flat paint are more than the difference
in coverage and cost of paint. They are
saying that necessary wall prep and paint
touch up cost much more for eggshell.
Does this make any sense to you?
A: I would have to say
that's true... shouldn't be to much extra
though maybe 0.10 more per square
foot
