Faux Finishes Process >> Combing

 Combing
Combing is a fun technique that creates a striated effect with paint and glaze. Traditional combing produces vertical lines that mimic the sheen of opulent silk. You can also use this technique to create waves, horizontal stripes, or checkered patterns for a more striking impression.

   Preparation
A clean, dry, dull surface is optimal for painting. Wash your walls with mild soap and rinse thoroughly. Scrape any loose paint, patch any holes, and sand smooth. Remove dust with a vacuum or tack cloth.

WARNING! Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping, or other means may generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in children or pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous substances requires the use of proper protective equipment, such as a properly fitted respirator (NIOSH-approved) and proper containment and cleanup.

 How To
Step 1
Mask ceilings, baseboards, and trim with painter's tape. Paint the wall with your desired basecoat color and allow to dry completely (minimum 4 hours or overnight).

Step 2
Mix one part Sherwin-Williams® SuperPaint® Interior Latex Satin to five parts illusions™ Faux Finish Glazing Liquid™. Beginning in one corner of the wall, roll your glaze coat on the entire height of your wall and approximately three feet wide. This will allow ample time to work before the glaze begins to dry.

Step 3
Lightly drag a dry comb or wallpaper brush down through the wet glaze in one continuous stroke from ceiling to floor. Apply even pressure and keep the tool tilted toward you to produce a streaked appearance. Wipe excess glaze from your tool after each stroke to maintain a clean edge. Repeat steps 2 and 3 as you work along the entire wall.

Tip
Stop dragging a few inches from the outside edge of your glaze as you work. This allows you to overlap your next three-foot-wide glaze coat for a smooth transition.

Optional Technique
Stripes are just the beginning. Experiment with alternating vertically and horizontally combed squares for a basket weave effect, or create a plaid pattern by combing horizontally through your vertical stripes before they dry.
