Your neighborhood Sherwin-Williams store has all the materials you need to achieve this faux painting technique.

* 1/4" nap roller and paint tray
* low-tack painter's tape
* 4" latex paint brush
* drop cloth
* practice board
* Sherwin-Williams® SuperPaint® Interior Latex Satin
* illusions® Faux Finish Crackle Medium

  Preparation:
A clean, dry, dull surface is optimal for painting. Wash your walls with mild soap and rinse thoroughly. Scrape any loose paint, patch any holes, and sand smooth. Remove dust with a vacuum or tack cloth.

WARNING! Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping, or other means may generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in children or pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous substances requires the use of proper protective equipment, such as a properly fitted respirator (NIOSH-approved) and proper containment and cleanup.

How To
Step 1
Mask ceilings, baseboards, and trim with painter's tape. Paint the wall with your desired basecoat color and allow to dry completely (minimum 4 hours or overnight). This will be the color that shows through the cracks.

Tip
Pour glaze mixture into a paint tray or plastic liner for easier dipping.

Step 2
With a brush or roller, apply an even coat of illusions® Faux Finish Crackle Medium. Allow to dry until it's no longer tacky - about two to four hours. (Don't wait longer than 4 hours before applying topcoat.)With a brush or roller, apply an even coat of illusions Faux Finish Crackle Medium.

Step 3
Apply a topcoat of a second color, being careful to paint in one direction. Do not overlap your strokes, as this will cause the paint to lift off. Within minutes, the topcoat will begin to crack, exposing random cracks of the basecoat color beneath.

Tip
Roll on a thin topcoat for small, fine cracks. For more pronounced cracking, apply a heavier topcoat with a brush.

Optional Technique
Don't stop with your walls. Crackle also works well on furniture, frames, accent pieces, and trim. After allowing the topcoat to dry at least 72 hours, you may want to protect these items with a coat of WoodClassics® Oil Polyurethane or Fastdry Oil Varnish. Keep in mind that they will slightly alter the color.
