Your neighborhood Sherwin-Williams store has all the materials you need to achieve this faux painting technique.

* 1/4" nap roller and paint tray
* disposable latex gloves
* lint-free cotton rags
* low-tack painter's tape
* plastic bucket
* drop cloth
* practice board
* Sherwin-Williams® SuperPaint® Interior Latex Satin
* illusions® Faux Finish Latex Glazing Liquid™

  Preparation:
A clean, dry, dull surface is optimal for painting. Wash your walls with mild soap and rinse thoroughly. Scrape any loose paint, patch any holes, and sand smooth. Remove dust with a vacuum or tack cloth.

WARNING! Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping, or other means may generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in children or pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous substances requires the use of proper protective equipment, such as a properly fitted respirator (NIOSH-approved) and proper containment and cleanup.

 How To
Step 1
Mask ceilings, baseboards, and trim with painter's tape. Paint the wall with your desired basecoat color and allow to dry completely (minimum 4 hours or overnight).

Step 2
Prepare your glaze mixture (one part Sherwin-Williams® SuperPaint® Interior Latex Satin to five parts illusions® Faux Finish Glazing Liquid™) in a plastic bucket. Soak a damp cotton rag with your glaze mixture and blot out the excess. (The less you blot out, the bolder your effect will be.) Pour glaze mixture into a paint tray or plastic liner for easier dipping.

Step 3
Practice shaping your rag until you achieve the desired pattern. Lightly dab it repeatedly on the wall, working in a 2-foot x 2-foot area. Reshape the rag often to produce varied textures, and reload the rag when dry. Overlap each impression, and rotate your hand at the wrist for a seamless look.

Tip
If an area becomes blotchy, allow the glaze to dry. Then, dip a clean rag in your base color and use the same dabbing technique to repair your wall.

Step 4
Continue working over the area to achieve a soft effect.Continue working over the area to achieve a soft effect.

Optional Technique/Ragging Off
For a different effect, try ragging off your glaze coat. Roll on a solid 3-foot x 3-foot section of glaze. Then dab with a damp rag to remove portions of the glaze and reveal your base coat color. Be sure to rinse out your rag often.

Optional Technique
Experiment with other materials to produce a unique look. Instead of using cotton rags for your ragging project, try plastic wrap, burlap, or brown paper bags.
