Deck Staining and Refinishing

Painting Articles >> Deck Staining and Refinishing
  When to Stain Your Deck
By staining your deck on a continuous basis every 2-3 years your deck will continue to look new for years to come.

Why to Stain Your Deck

Wood decks, fences and siding are exposed to high levels of stress from the severe weather conditions that shrink and swell the wood. Without proper maintenance wood decks can develop problems such as checks and cracks, raised grain, and mildew, thus increasing the risk of decay and insect attack. Once a deck has been neglected of the proper protection it can be very time consuming and costly to restore.

  The Finished Product
When your deck has been refinished using the proper deck refinishing and staining products available on the market today just remember to wash your deck down once or twice a year especially where mold and mildew are present. This will help your deck maintain its beauty for years to come.

Quick Guide

How to Stain Decks

• Choose your wood stain color for your deck. It’s best to stay close to the current color, or slightly darker. If you’d like to choose a lighter stain color, than your existing color will need to be removed. You can use Flood Stain Remover or a similar product.

• Pressure wash your deck and scrub with a deck cleaner from any home improvement store

• Scrape all gaps and cracks where the boards meet, sand all surfaces, sweep free of debris.

• Let the deck dry completely.

• Stain all vertical surfaces first (handrails, spindles, posts, etc.)

• Stain a few boards at a time to prevent lap marks

• Let stain set for 24-48 hours.

Use extreme care when using a pressure washer - the force of the water can cause injury to people and animals. Follow all the rental company's instructions when using this piece of equipment.

Avoid staining the deck in extreme (hot, cold, windy) weather.
