Lightening Your Dark Home
Over
the years log homes do lose their wood siding
color. This fading will happen if you haven’t
recently had wood-graining or staining techniques
performed on the exterior siding of your home.
In many cases the logs even with cedar siding
will fade from a bright brown color to a dark,
drab brown or from a bright color to gray.
Wood Graining
Wood graining is a technique that is used on
wood siding that uses your existing wood to give
your home an all-new look. It allows log home
refinishers to transpose your home from a drab
gray into a home that might have a nice mahogany
or cherry finish, depending on your tastes. Once
you decide on what color of grain base and stain
you want, you can sand down your home and clean
it to remove any dirt and debris. You can then
apply the graining base and the stain to each
wood log. Then you can apply a sealant and a couple
coats of varnish.
Stains
Another option to lighten the appearance of your
dark or faded log home is to re-stain your home.
When you stain your home, you first would repair
any holes in your home caused by pests or other
types of damage. Next clean the exterior to remove
all grease, dirt and debris from your home. You’ll
apply the stain of your choice. Painting siding
is also an option.
