Blasting Your Stains
If you are concerned about cleaning your
log homes with a power washer or if you are trying
to remove your old stains, you’ll want to
use a blasting technique calls stain blasting
or chemical stain removal. This typically involves
using corn cobs or glass beads and a high-pressure
air compressor to blast your old stains off your
home. Corn cobs and glass beads not only keep
moisture out of your home, but they also are good
for the environment and are biodegradable.
Stain Removing Methods
When you use the stain blasting or chemical stain
removal techniques, you’ll use corn cobs
and glass beads and blast your home with a hose
and a high-pressure air compressor that you can
buy or rent from a home-improvement store. A standard
air compressor obviously won’t do the trick.
Stain Cleaning
Stain cleaning or blasting is essential if you
are wanting to apply a new stain to your log home
and if your old stain isn’t adhesive enough
to handle a new wood stain without removal. Staining
your home should be done only after effectively
cleaning and repairing your wood and filling in
any holes.

Quick Guide
How to Stain and or Refinish a Log Home,
Cabin or House
• Choose your stain. Try to use the same
stain as the existing coat. Choosing the correct
stain be a tricky and complicated process. When
applying the stain for your log home semi-transparent
stain is recommended as it will last longer and
look good for many years to come with the proper
maintenance. Be sure to power wash or have a professional
pressure washing company clean your log home once
per year to maintain it’s beauty after the
refinishing process.
• Power wash and prepare the surface. Make
sure the entire area is free of debris, dirt,
mold, mildew, contamination, flaking stain, etc.
• Mask off windows, doors, lights, roofs,
gutters etc
• Spray the stain on. Use an airless paint
sprayer to apply the stain evenly. Apply a thick
and heavy coat when spraying. Most stains are
like water so it can be pretty messy; place a
rag around the shuck of your brush to prevent
stain from dripping continuously and going down
your arm.
• Back
brush the applied stain immediately. Usually for
this process it’s best for two people to
work together. One person may spray the stain
on while another person back brushes the stain
into the surface forcing the material to soak
into the wood and allow an even finish.
• Allow the siding to dry for 24 to 48
hours depending on the weather, and manufacture
specifications. A second coat of spray may be
needed depending on the type of stain used. Allow
each coat to fully dry before applying another.
How to Stain Blast or Chemical Blast Stains
• Gather your supplies of your corn cobs
and/or glass beads and your powerful air-compressor
blaster.
• Start at the top of one side of your home
and work on one side at a time. Point the blaster
at a 45-degree angle about four feet from your
home.
• Don’t blast any trouble spots for
too long of a period, as prolonged cleaning efforts
can damage your log home.
• After you’re done with all sides
of your home, check your home for any spots that
weren’t cleaned completely. Blast that area
slightly again.
• Stain your home with the stain of your
choice.
